MEDICAL CARE

photoIf you are from a member state of the European Union we recommend that you get a European Health Card. This will give you equal access to medical care as a Spanish citizen. You can also use the Spanish public health system once you get registered at the local town hall, which will provide you with the Certifícatado de Empadronimiento.

All this means that medical care will be free to you and that prescriptions will be available at reduced prices. This does not however cover dental and eye care which are covered privately.

If you are employed in Spain or registered as self-employed you will be given a social security number which will eliminate the need for a European Health Card.

Waiting times to see a GP (primary care doctor) are between one to three days. If it’s an emergency and you are insitent you can be seen the same day. Waiting times to see specialists will vary from region to region and can range from a week to 6 months. However, emergencies can cut this time considerably.

Prescriptions are available at the huge network of pharmacies. These are easily recognised by the flashing green crosses they all display outside.

However if you prefer to use private medical insurance see the list of companies below. Sanitas is owned by BUPA from the UK.
